Top 7 Things to Do While Vacationing in Cyprus

If you’re all about dazzling beaches, year-round sunshine,  and magical sunsets, Cyprus should definitely be on your travel bucket list. This tiny, yet imposing Mediterranean island hits all the right notes when it comes to having a vacation of a lifetime — from its laid-back island vibe and long stretches of pristine shorelines, to its ancient culture and vibrant cities.

There’s so much to see and do here, you could spend weeks exploring the island and still find a new experience every day. Alas, not many people can afford to spend that long on a vacation. So how about we walk you through the best attractions to help you make the most of your stay.

1. Visit Nissi Beach

There’s hardly a better place to experience the amazing sunrise and sunsets of Cyprus. Situated at the southeast region of the island, Nissi Beach boasts a long stretch of pristine white sands flanked by some of the bluest waters you’ll ever see.

The place is ever bustling with lots of water sport activities to keep you busy all day. At night, revel with fellow partygoers at a beach party or at any of the many nightclubs available. Then do it all over again tomorrow — the fun never stops in Nissi Beach.

2. Hike into the Avakas Gorge

Explore some of the island’s most undisturbed natural landscapes on this 2.5 km trail. Avakas Gorge is located along the western coast of Cyprus. It comprises unique rock formations that were carved over time by a river that once flowed through the area. Today, it is home to rare flora and fauna, including the Centaurea akamantis, a rare flower that is endemic to Cyprus.

Have your camera ready as there’s no shortage of photogenic scenes to capture. Stock up on water, snacks, and perhaps a hat to protect against the midday heat.

3. Explore Paphos

The coastal town of Paphos is reportedly the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. As you can imagine, the entire region is filled with echoes from a distant past that was once believed to be the playing ground of the gods. This is the place to be if you’re looking to explore the fascinating history and amazing archaeological sites of Cyprus.

Paphos comprises two sections — the lower section, also known as Kato Paphos, and the upper section. You will find an exuberance of hotels and architectural landmarks in Kato Paphos, as well as the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, a  famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. The upper section mainly houses the commercial district of Paphos. Here you can explore various delicacies and shop at the many markets.

4. Take a trip to Makronissos Beach in Ayia Napa

Don’t let the name mislead you. Makronissos Beach is actually a collection of several small beaches that are linked together through coastal pathways. The shorelines extend as far as the eye can see and the soft white sands make such a delicate contrast to the turquoise waters.

It’s truly a beautiful sight, perfect for relaxing strolls, romantic walks, and if you’re up for it, a bevy of adventurous water sports.

5. Spend a day (or two) in Limassol

Limassol is the largest urban destination after Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus. This major seaport is home to a wide array of attractions, including the beautiful and traditional Omodos village and the Kourion ancient theater. You also don’t want to miss out on exploring the nearby wine-making villages. Limassol boasts a vibrant nightlife scene, as well as a host of Instagram-worthy scenery at every turn.

Go shopping along Anexartisias Street, check out the Limassol Castle, stroll along the beachfront, and marvel at the majestic yachts docked along the marina — you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to having an adventure in Limassol.

6. Conquer the Troodos Mountains

Looking for some outdoor recreation that does not involve lounging by the beach? The towering Troodos Mountains located in southwest Cyprus present an exciting challenge unlike any other. Enjoy long leisurely walks along the trails at the base of the mountain, or take it up a notch and rent a mountain bike to explore even further.

You can also visit the Caledonia Falls and explore other charming landmarks in the area, such as the Archangel Michael Church in Pedoulas or the Byzantine Timios Stavros Church in nearby Pelendri.

7. Be one with nature at to the Akamas Peninsula

The Akamas Peninsula offers a wonderful escape from the bustling city life. It is located at the western end of Cyprus and is the go-to destination for visitors looking for an adventure off the beaten track. There are no paved roads leading to Akamas so be ready for a hiking or biking experience.

Not to worry, as there is so much to see and do along the way. The area is home to amazing wildlife, including reptiles, rare sea turtles, and native birds. Plus the unspoiled landscape offers so many perfect backdrops for countless photographs.
