For those looking for an active holiday, winter provides a number of excellent ways to spend a week or two. For most, this means skiing or snowboarding – but there are a number of other winter-specific pastimes to pursue, too. Ice-climbing, tobogganing and ice skating might all appeal.
So, which resorts might appeal to winter sports enthusiasts? Let’s run through a few of the more appealing destinations.
France
Ski holidays in France are almost the default option for many British tourists. Many of the world’s most popular and fully-featured ski resorts are to be found here, including Val d’Isere, Tignes, Val Thorens, and Chamonix. Each is very accessible, with affordable flights constantly departing to the Alps. Look for a resort with ski-in, ski-out facilities, and try to take the time out for apres-ski activities. You can build an igloo in Chamonix, or tour an ice cave!
Finnish Lapland
Whether you’re looking to entertain a family, or you’re just looking to spend a week surrounded by the original winter wonderland, Lapland is an excellent choice. There are a number of amazing sports to try here, including snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and riding through the trees in a husky-drawn sleigh. Venture far enough north, and you’ll be able to witness the famous Northern Lights in the night sky. While you’re in the region, you might also try out local traditions, like the wood-fired sauna!
Italy
Italy is a country whose appeal during winter is often overlooked. A stay in the Dolomites can provide plenty of natural beauty, and a range of ski runs, ranging from leisurely blue runs to challenging black ones. This part of the world is also great for would-be ice-climbers: there are suitable faces spread throughout the region. Of course, part of the appeal of the Italian Alps is that you’ll be able to enjoy Italian cuisine throughout your holiday.
Japan
One of the things that distinguishes winter sports in Japan is the consistency of the snowfall. You can expect high-quality powder for much of the ski season, as well as a variety of resorts that will appeal to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Those visiting the country for the first time will want to stop at Niseko, which is the largest resort, and the one that caters to English speakers the best. There’s also the host of the 1998 Winter Olympics, Hakuba, to consider.
